I'm not only a Software Developer. I'm a husband, a father of two, with a healthy supply of dad jokes and bad puns. I've played basketball since I was 10, spent countless hours on the court, and have had some pretty awesome stories. I've channeled this passion most recently into coaching and have volunteered with my local youth basketball and football leagues over the past several years. I believe it's important to share knowledge, and my focus has been on teaching the importance of teamwork, developing fundamental skills, and sharing a love for the game that has brought me so much joy.
Art and music are other hobbies of mine, whether it's painting portraits, designing concert fliers, going to rock shows, learning new guitar riffs and drum beats, or banging chords on a piano.
With my most recent venture back into the classroom, I've discovered a passion for teaching and a rejuvenated love of web development and problem solving. Thanks to NSS, I've truly embraced the beginner's mind and start each day ready to learn and try something new.
Experience
Upon graduating from NC State University with a BA in Art and Design, I began my career as a graphic artist in Southern California. A consulting opportunity fell into my lap and I soon found myself in Dublin, Ireland, where I was first introduced to web development. After a few HTML classes and some self-study in CSS and Flash, I began designing and building websites for Irish businesses. This is when I learned that unlimited knowledge is merely a few keystrokes away. Fortunately, my employer liked my work and extended my three-month contract to just under two years.
Returning to the US, I continued working in graphics and web development until a shift in the field led me to explore other career options. Curiously enough, I entered the legal profession as a court stenographer in New York City where I routinely transcribed testimony at speeds up to and beyond 225 words per minute, often in highly-contentious and confidential settings. This is where I honed my communication skills and became quite comfortable handling a room full of attorneys or attending government events to transcribe Presidential speeches.
While I had great success as a court reporter, it never felt like the right fit for me. With a move to Nashville and after some serious introspection, I enrolled in the full-stack web development bootcamp at Nashville Software School. It didn't take long for me to realize what I had been missing was the creative aspect of designing and building web applications, troubleshooting and debugging code, and collaborating with peers to complete a project
Since completing the program, I’ve spent well over a year now working as a Junior Instructor at NSS, coaching students through the full-stack web developer course while further developing my own skills as a programmer. I can honestly say this has been the most challenging and rewarding work I've ever done and am forever grateful for the opportunity to work with such an amazing group of people.
If you continued reading this far, thank you for taking the time. I'm excited to discuss any potential opportunities for us to work together.
